Spanish left-back Alejandro Grimaldo endured a 12-year journey of patience before earning his first cap for Spain's senior national team. Grimaldo began his career at Barcelona B, making his Segunda División debut in September 2011 at just 15 years old, becoming the youngest player ever to feature for the club's reserve side.
However, the path to the senior national team proved far longer. His first call-up came in May 2011 for the U16 squad, but his senior debut did not arrive until November 2023, in a match against Cyprus in Larnaca.
At 28 years old, Grimaldo finally stepped onto the pitch in a Spain shirt, describing the achievement as the result of a long process of patience and hard work. The Barcelona youth product had shown exceptional talent from a young age, briefly playing for the club's B team before returning to the Juvenil setup.
Grimaldo's story illustrates how even the most talented players can face lengthy journeys before reaching the pinnacle of international football.
