Arthur Fils, France's top-ranked tennis player, has pulled out of Roland Garros due to a hip injury. The 21-year-old retired during the first set of his opening match at the Italian Open in Rome, his final warmup before Paris.
Fils revealed that his hip had been bothering him significantly and that he had been unable to train for the past two weeks. Although medical exams did not reveal any structural issues, the Frenchman said he was still experiencing considerable pain.
Fils stated he would not be fit to compete at 100 percent and refused to take unnecessary risks. His withdrawal is a major blow to French hopes at their home Grand Slam.
While the severity of the injury remains unclear, the young player is expected to focus on recovery in the coming weeks.
