Artificial streetlights in Israel trap insects in deadly spirals

Doctoral candidate Idan Sheizaf, supervised by Professor Ariel Chipman, led a field study in the Golan Heights. The team observed that artificial streetlights caused the isopod species Armadillo Sórdido to form massive spirals, effectively trapping thousands of individuals.

The findings suggest that light pollution can dramatically alter the behavior of ground-dwelling arthropods. The authors call for a reassessment of urban lighting policies to protect soil biodiversity.
