Arturo Pérez-Reverte Criticizes Inclusive Language in Athletics

Writer Arturo Pérez-Reverte, a member of the Real Academia Española, took to X during the European Athletics Championships to denounce the term “atleto”. He argued that the use of “atletas y atletas” reflects a level of stupidity that knows no limits.

Pérez-Reverte reminded his 2. 5 million followers that the RAE has historically absorbed such linguistic changes without objection.

The author, known for novels such as the Alatriste series, has consistently opposed inclusive language, citing previous statements on the television program El Hormiguero in 2021. In that interview he recounted receiving harsh attacks from radical feminists who labeled him “machista” and “cabrón”.

He reiterated that language, like society, is built on many patriarchal norms and must evolve, but warned against forced changes that ignore tradition. The tweet sparked discussion among athletes and commentators, highlighting the ongoing debate over gender‑neutral terminology in sport.
