An archaeological discovery in a cave near the town of Fureidis in northern Israel is compelling researchers to reconsider part of early human history. Scientists have identified evidence of human occupation that could be as old as 400,000 years, suggesting the existence of more organized and technologically capable groups during that period than previously estimated.
The site was first identified in the 1970s, when human activity there was believed to date to around 200,000 years ago. However, new excavations and analyses conducted by archaeologists from the Israel Antiquities Authority and the University of Haifa have completely revised that initial interpretation.
The breakthrough came from the study of stone tools found inside the cave, particularly flint artifacts such as hand axes, scrapers, and cutting blades associated with the Acheulo-Yabrudian culture.
