Legislative developments in Colombia have brought forward a notable initiative regarding the national military service framework. Senator Jota Pe Hernandez introduced a bill for the 2026-2027 legislative period proposing an optional path for older citizens.
The measure specifically allows individuals between the ages of 24 and 28 to enlist voluntarily. Officials emphasize that this proposal does not impose any mandatory obligation on adults over 24 years old.
Instead, it creates an alternative route for those who missed the standard age window. Currently, mandatory service is strictly limited to men between 18 and the day before turning 24.
The proposed framework would keep the existing mandatory rules completely intact while adding this voluntary tier. Interested candidates would still need to successfully pass rigorous physical, psychological, and aptitude evaluations.
