The American football community is currently in deep mourning following the tragic death of former cornerback Alphonso Smith Jr. The former standout player passed away at the young age of 40 in the state of Florida.
Widely regarded as one of the greatest student athletes in Wake Forest University history, he left an enduring legacy in college football. His exceptional talent was recognized in the 2009 NFL Draft, where he was selected with the 37th overall pick by the Denver Broncos.
However, before appearing in an official regular season game for the Denver franchise, he was traded to the Detroit Lions. He spent the majority of his professional career playing for the Detroit organization in the National Football League.
According to reports from law enforcement and related local authorities, the former cornerback was found dead on Wednesday at a residential housing community. Local officials later confirmed through investigations that the official cause of death was determined to be suicide.
