Introduced in the 2021 season, F1 sprint races add a 100‑kilometre dash to the weekend schedule, giving drivers a chance to earn up to five additional points. The sprint grid is set by a short qualifying session, and the top three finishers receive 3, 2 and 1 points respectively, while the race winner also claims the usual Grand Prix points.
Because the sprint takes place on Saturday, teams must balance tyre usage and strategy differently from the main Grand Prix. Multiple sprints can appear throughout a season, potentially reshaping the championship battle.
