The Mexican Football Federation confirmed that Rafael Márquez will take over as head coach of the national team after the 2026 World Cup, succeeding Javier Aguirre by July 20, 2026 at the latest. However, former manager Hugo Sánchez has once again expressed his distrust of the FMF board.
Sánchez, who coached Mexico during the 2006-2010 cycle before being dismissed, accused Federation president Justino Compe of betrayal during his tenure. The five-time Pichichi winner urged the current board to honor their commitment to support Márquez and provide stable leadership as Mexico begins its preparations for the 2030 World Cup.
