The massive jellyfish swarm that struck the swimming segment of the Valencia Sprint Triathlon impacted more than 200 athletes, overloading medical crews and causing roughly 50 participants to withdraw. Organizers had warned competitors about the presence of jellyfish and recommended neoprene suits for protection.
Yet, the unusually warm water led many to forgo the gear and dive in regardless. Swimmers encountered a density far exceeding expectations, resulting in painful stings for many.
Following the incident, officials said they will implement stricter monitoring and rapid‑response protocols for future races.
