Designer John Galliano will no longer be the primary focus of the upcoming fashion exhibition accompanying the Met Gala 2027. The sudden change behind this decision stems from a controversy that emerged immediately after the Metropolitan Museum of Art announced the project.
The exhibition, originally titled John Galliano Horizons, was revealed on July 31 to honor the creator as only the third living designer to receive such a tribute. However, the announcement quickly reignited intense questions surrounding Galliano actions from 2011 involving antisemitic and racist comments.
Those past remarks had a massive impact on his career and led to his conviction on two hate related offenses in Paris. Despite initial expectations that the project would move forward normally, tensions surrounding the exhibition escalated significantly in recent days.
Several museum members and donors expressed serious concerns about hosting the event, while New York City Council President Julie Menin publicly urged the institution to reverse its course. Consequently, the mounting controversy expanded well beyond the fashion world and directly reached the museum administration and the key organizers responsible for the event.
