A federal judge issued a new order on Sunday clarifying the scope of a recent injunction that granted an extra year of eligibility to college athletes. The injunction, which was intended to protect players whose eligibility had expired, does not extend to football players who have already signed professional contracts.
The judge emphasized that the ruling applies only to athletes in sports other than football. As a result, football athletes with pro deals must forfeit any remaining collegiate eligibility and comply with professional league regulations.
Players in basketball, baseball and other sports remain covered by the original injunction and can continue to compete at the college level. The decision underscores the judiciary’s role in interpreting eligibility rules amid ongoing debates over amateur status.
