Microsoft cut between 200 and 400 staff from its Azure research and development units in Beijing and Shanghai, reducing the Chinese Azure workforce by roughly half. The layoffs were confined to the two major cloud hubs and were announced as part of a broader realignment.
The company said the move reflects a shift toward prioritizing artificial‑intelligence services and products. With fewer engineers, Azure’s operations in China will undergo restructuring.
Industry analysts view the reduction as a signal that Microsoft is intensifying its AI‑first focus across its global portfolio.
