Former Spanish Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy sparked controversy by claiming the French national team lacks French players. The French Embassy and current PM Pedro Sánchez swiftly rejected the xenophobic remarks.

The Embassy clarified that 23 players were born in France and the remaining three are also French citizens.
