Basque Referee Gorka Etayo Makes History in Segunda División Derby
The Spanish Technical Referees Committee has broken new ground by appointing a referee from the same autonomous community as only one of the competing clubs. Thirty‑year‑old Gorka Etayo from Bilbao will officiate the Sanse‑Cultural Leonesa fixture.
The move overturns the long‑standing rule that barred such territorial assignments in derby matches. Etayo, now in his second season in the Segunda División, welcomes the historic assignment.
Officials expect this precedent to become more common in future campaigns.
