Billy Álvarez’s Legacy at Cruz Azul: Ambitions Unfulfilled

Guillermo "Billy" Álvarez Cuevas left a controversial imprint on Cruz Azul during his presidency, yet he never matched the glory of his father's era. After the club’s golden years of the late 1960s and early 1970s, Billy promised new titles and a modernized academy.

Management disputes, financial strain, and corruption allegations, however, tarnished the team's reputation. He was arrested in early 2025, fled for almost five years, and was recaptured later that year.

The former president died at 80 in prison, largely forgotten by the fan base he once served.
