Colombia Adds New Public Holiday: July 9 Declared Day of Nuestra Señora del Rosario de Chiquinquirá

Colombia continues to rank among the countries with the most public holidays worldwide. President Gustavo Petro sanctioned Law 2578 on June 1, 2026, which immediately established July 9 as the Day of Nuestra Señora del Rosario de Chiquinquirá.

The date pays tribute to the figure considered the religious patron of Colombians and honors the municipality of Chiquinquirá in the Boyacá region. The measure applies as a mandatory day off for both the public and private sectors.

While citizens welcomed the opportunity to plan trips, the business community raised concerns over the economic and operational implications. Chiquinquirá is explicitly recognized as a central hub of faith, culture, history, and tourism at both national and international levels.
