Iran announces World Cup squad, leaves out Azmoun and other forwards
The Iranian Football Federation has released its preliminary squad for the 2026 World Cup, omitting star striker Sardar Azmoun. Despite being one of the nation’s top scorers with 57 goals, the coaching staff opted to give opportunities to younger talent.
Taremi and Jahanbakhsh were also excluded from the initial 26‑man list. The selected group emphasizes pace on the wings and dynamism in midfield.
The 26 players will have the chance to earn a final spot in the June preparation matches.
