Jesús María Zabarte, the 'Mondragón Butcher', Dies at 80

Jesús María Zabarte, known as the ‘Mondragón Butcher’, was an 80‑year‑old former ETA member who regained his freedom in 2013 after a lengthy imprisonment. He died this week, having previously served a long sentence and a 29‑year release.

Zabarte was responsible for the deaths of 17 people and led the Donostia command. His death has revived debate in Spain over the country’s terrorist past.
