Sami Pajari seized control of the Rally Paraguay leaderboard following a chaotic and unpredictable opening day of competition. Serving as the eleventh round of the 2026 World Rally Championship season, the South American event immediately lived up to expectations of being among the toughest.

The initial eight special stages delivered continuous drama, featuring numerous punctures, mechanical issues, and championship twists. Competitors faced severe challenges across the demanding terrain, shaking up the overall standings led by championship contender Elfyn Evans.

Hayden Paddon, positioned second overall, admitted that despite the chaos, the opening leg felt deceptively testing for the remaining survivalists. Paddon lost his grip on the lead near the end of the day after suffering a costly tyre blowout.
